Completion of Deagon Deviation overpass a major milestone for Gateway Motorway upgrade

An important milestone has been reached on the Gateway Motorway Upgrade North project with the opening of the new Deagon Deviation overpass.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the $1.14 billion jointly funded project was on track for completion later in 2018.

“The Deagon Deviation overpass is one of the largest of 13 structures being built or widened as part of this major project, which will see the motorway widened to three lanes in each direction between Nudgee and Deagon,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The overpass completion marks a significant construction milestone for the project.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the opening of the new Deagon Deviation significantly improved safety for motorists.

“The Deagon section of the motorway has a poor crash record, highlighting the need for significant safety improvements,” Mr Bailey said.

“We are advising motorists that in conjunction with the opening of the Deagon Deviation overpass, the project would involve closing the northbound Sandgate Road on-ramp to the motorway at Boondall.

“Building this new dedicated overpass and the new grade-separated connection greatly improves safety for motorists by eliminating weaving and merging on the motorway, as well as increasing capacity by separating local traffic from motorway traffic.”

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said, “Local residents have said they are looking forward to the completion of this project. People appreciate the billion dollar investment the Government has made in their area.”

“Motorists are reminded to continue to be aware of local traffic signage and changed conditions when travelling through road works.

“We thank motorists and the local community for their ongoing patience as we deliver this important upgrade project for south-east Queensland.”

State Member for Sandgate and Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said:

“This is a great outcome for residents and commuters on the Northside and it will help to deliver improved traffic flows in the area.

“I want to thank residents for their patience during construction on this important project, which will also improve safety on the local road network.”

The Gateway Upgrade North project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($914.18 million) and the Queensland Government ($228.54 million).
