Increase for low-paid workers in WA

The WA Government has welcomed the decision by the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission to increase the State minimum wage by $18 a week.

The State minimum wage will increase to $726.90 a week from July 1, 2018.

Award rates of pay will also increase by $18 per week.

The increase will apply to many low-paid workers in the State industrial relations system.

The new State minimum wage is still above the new national minimum wage, which is now $719.20 per week.

About one-third of WA employees are covered by the State industrial relations system.

The decision comes on the back of renewed confidence in the WA economy, with a number of key indicators showing significant improvement in the last 12 months, including a strong increase in job vacancies.
