The Victorian Government will provide more funding to help Corangamite landholders protect the region’s priority waterways.
Victorian Minister for Water Lisa Neville announced $1.5 million for landholders to preserve and improve the region’s waterways.
The money will be distributed to 45 local landowners and underpin the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority’s Corangamite Waterway Program, whose primary focus is conservation works for waterways.
Local waterways to benefit include the Barwon River, Mooraboool River and Charleys Creek – among others.
Projects will implement management plans developed in collaboration with landholders and include pest plant and animal control, fencing, revegetation and, where required, install alternate stock watering infrastructure.
This investment will result in over 400 hectares of weed control annually over the next three years and the protection of over 94 kilometres of river frontage in the Corangamite region.
The Waterway Program has already successfully protected and improved hundreds of kilometres of the region’s rivers and streams to deliver significant benefits for native vegetation and wildlife, while also allowing landowners to better manage stock and further develop farm planning strategies.
The investment is part of the Victorian Government’s $222 million investment in improving the health of waterways and catchments, outlined in Water for Victoria.
The Corangamite CMA is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of waterway management actions across the Corangamite region.
